West Vancouver renovations rarely come with room for error. Between hillside lots, heritage-era character homes, and finishes that need to hold up to a much higher standard, the margin for a contractor who "figures it out as they go" is thin. Custom Installations exists to close that gap.
We plan every project properly before a single wall comes down, manage the trades so nothing stalls, and finish the details the way a $150,000 kitchen or a full estate renovation actually demands. From waterfront character homes in Dundarave to hillside estates in the British Properties, we bring the same standard of care to every address.

"General contractor" gets used loosely on the North Shore. Some of the names that show up in a West Vancouver search are one-trade specialists who bring in help when they need it. Others sub out the entire job and add a markup without really managing anything on site. Neither is what you're paying for when you hire a GC — and neither is acceptable on a home where the finish quality has to match the property.
Here's what a Custom Installations project actually looks like:
Pre-Construction Planning
Scope, materials, and sequencing are locked in before demolition starts — including any permit or Development Permit steps your address may trigger.
Trade & Supplier Coordination
Electricians, plumbers, tile setters, cabinetmakers, painters — scheduled so premium finishes go in correctly the first time, not redone because someone was out of sequence.
Site Management with Real Discretion
A tidy, secured job site every day. On gated or view properties, we work around your schedule, your household staff, and your privacy — not the other way around.
Quality Control
The straight lines, clean transitions, and finishing details that separate custom work from a standard renovation.
Clear Communication
You know what's happening this week, what's next, and what we need from you — without having to chase us for updates.
We focus on the interior renovation work where craftsmanship and coordination matter most — the finishes that get lived in and looked at every day:
From full custom kitchens in an estate build to a refresh of a Dundarave character home, we plan cabinetry, countertops, lighting, and flooring transitions as one cohesive project — not a stack of separate trades.
Layout changes, tile work, fixture installs, and waterproofing done properly. On the North Shore's wet climate, moisture management is the difference between a bathroom that looks good for a year and one that holds up for twenty.
Hardwood Flooring & Refinishing
Installation of hardwood, engineered wood, and luxury vinyl plank, plus refinishing of existing floors. Moisture testing, subfloor inspection, and acclimatization are done properly — skip them and it shows up later as cupping, gaps, and squeaks.
Drywall Installation & Repair
Demo, install, and repair, finished paint-ready. The unglamorous work that everything else in the room depends on.
Interior Painting
Full-room or whole-home painting with the prep work — patching, sanding, priming — that makes the difference between a paint job and a finish.
Whole-Home Interior Renovations
When the work spans rooms - opening up a layout, refreshing a tired interior, or getting a recently purchased home ready to live in - we manage the full scope so you don't have to juggle five different trades.
Get Started
Renovating in West Vancouver isn't the same job as renovating in North Vancouver or the City of Vancouver — the housing stock, the terrain, and the approval process are all different. Here's what that means for your project:
A large share of West Vancouver — the British Properties, Whitby Estates, Chartwell, Cypress Park Estates, parts of Caulfeild — sits on steep, engineered hillside terrain. Structural changes on these lots can require a geotechnical engineer's report and a Development Permit before a building permit is even considered. We'll tell you early if your address falls into this category, so it's planned for from day one instead of discovered mid-project.
Much of West Vancouver falls under Development Permit Area guidelines that govern the exterior form and character of a home — meaning renovations that change what's visible from the street can trigger a separate approval process on top of the standard building permit. We'll flag this at the scoping stage so it's factored into your timeline, not a surprise six weeks in.
The District's Tree Bylaw was tightened in December 2025, lowering the protected-tree threshold to 20 cm in diameter for properties undergoing development. On a treed lot — which describes most of West Vancouver — this can affect site access, landscaping, and exterior work tied to a renovation. We coordinate with the right consultants when a project intersects with protected trees.
Many West Vancouver properties, particularly in Caulfeild, Eagle Harbour, and the upper-mountain neighbourhoods, sit near creeks or watercourses, where construction within 15 metres of the top of bank can require additional approval. Waterfront homes in Dundarave and Ambleside carry their own moisture and envelope considerations. We plan around both.
Ambleside, Dundarave, and Sentinel Hill have a strong stock of older character homes where original wiring, plumbing, and finishes need to be respected or carefully upgraded. British Properties and Altamont skew toward larger custom-built homes where the renovation standard has to match architecturally significant, high-end construction. We treat these as genuinely different projects, not the same playbook applied twice.
Why Choose Us?
We work across West Vancouver's full range of properties, from village-core character homes to hillside estates:
We also serve North Vancouver, Coquitlam and select projects across the Lower Mainland.
We are extremely happy with the work done by Custom Installations! They repaired the laminate flooring in our living room and installed new tiles in the entryway- we couldn’t be happier with the results. They were reliable, professional, and responded to all our inquiries promptly.
We serve West Vancouver and communities throughout the Lower Mainland, bringing the same standard of planning and craftsmanship to every project.
In most cases, yes. We'll flag early whether your project needs a standard building permit, a Development Permit for form and character, or additional steps for a hillside or watercourse-adjacent lot — and coordinate with the geotechnical or planning consultants those situations call for.
A bathroom typically runs 3–6 weeks on site. A kitchen runs 6–10 weeks. A whole-home renovation can run 4–7 months. Permit timelines add to the front end — for straightforward interior work that's usually 4–8 weeks, but projects requiring a Development Permit or geotechnical review can take considerably longer, and we'll walk you through that early.
Often, yes, for a single-room project. For whole-home work it depends on scope, and we'll lay out the realistic phases — including how we manage access and noise around household staff or family schedules — before you decide.
We focus on interior renovations and finishes — kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, drywall, and painting. If your project involves a structural addition or a ground-up custom build, we'll say so upfront and can point you to a trusted partner.
A secured, tidy site every day, crew briefed on any access or confidentiality expectations for the property, and scheduling built around your household rather than a generic 9-to-5. On gated or view properties, we plan logistics around your needs from the first conversation.
We build with manufacturers we trust to match the level of craftsmanship going into the work — Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Bona, Mohawk, Kentwood, Timeless, and Rockwool among them.
Most projects are quoted as fixed-price once scope and selections are confirmed, giving you cost certainty before work begins. For older or architecturally complex homes with real unknowns, we'll discuss the right structure with you upfront.
